The LAB was launched in 2015 as a multipurpose space for exhibiting and promoting contemporary art. Previously an industrial laser laboratory, the building was renovated by renowned Seattle architect Tom Kundig. His vision was to integrate industrial elements from the building’s history with flexible exhibition spaces that accommodate both large and small scale artworks and installations. Exhibitions at The Lab feature post war modern and contemporary works of painting, photography, and sculpture from an international roster of artists.
Founders
Judy and Jeff Greenstein believe art affords enjoyment and contemplation while stimulating creativity and providing a forum for expressions that build tolerance. Accordingly, they are passionate about helping others access, acquire and appreciate art. This includes supporting local and international museums and their exhibitions through direct financial support and the lending of works, as well as opening the Lab to visitors.
Judy’s understanding and appreciation of art originated visiting New York’s amazing museums as a child. With the mindset of a student, Judy thrives on gaining deep knowledge about a movement, individual artist or specific piece in order to contextualize its place or potential place in history. Whether its meeting with the artist or a museum curator, Judy seeks to understand the story and thinking behind a work and enjoys sharing those stories with others. This assessment helps ensure their artists and art are original, forward thinking and hopefully enduring.
Jeff Greenstein’s passion for investing, trading, and collecting began over 4 decades ago with sports cards. The past 15 years these energies, or arguably obsessions, have been channeled into contemporary art. The Greensteins’ constantly-evolving interests and holdings arise from Jeff devoting significant time to studying from an extensive art book library, regularly visiting art fairs and galleries, and speaking with knowledgeable collectors, curators and dealers. Jeff finds the quest to identify, learn about and then source undiscovered and potentially important works to be intellectually stimulating, personally rewarding and a ton of fun.
